As we said previously:
The Past Perfect expresses the idea that something occurred before another action in the past.
Example:
1- I had never seen such a beautiful beach before I went to Kauai.
2-Tony knew Istanbul so well because he had visited the city several times.
3- Had Susan ever studied Thai before she moved to Thailand?
Second:
The PAST PROGRESSIVE TENSE indicates continuing action, something that was happening, going on, at some point in the past.
Example:
-A: How long had you been studying Turkish before you moved to Ankara?
B: I had not been studying Turkish very long.
